Should I Feed My Doberman Bones?

What Science and Veterinary Practice Actually Say?

The short answer: the possible benefits are limited, and the risks are real and sometimes severe. That’s the honest starting point for any Doberman owner weighing whether to add bones to the diet — and the rest of this article explains why.

The Doberman had been trying to eat for two days. He would approach the bowl, lower his muzzle, and back away. His owner had noticed the appetite fading for some time already, but now the dog was practically refusing food even though he was clearly hungry. At the vet, a complete blood panel was run and every result came back clean. Nothing pointed to infection, organic disease, or poisoning. It was only when the vet looked inside the mouth that the picture became clear: part of one tooth was missing, and inflammation had developed in its place and spread to the gums. The dog hadn’t stopped eating because he wasn’t hungry. He had stopped because chewing hurt.

The tooth had fracture.

This scene plays out in veterinary clinics more often than owners realize, and it’s a fitting way into a topic surrounded by strong opinions and very little calm analysis. Bones have been considered a natural part of a dog’s diet for decades, and owners of large working breeds like the Doberman often offer them instinctively, on the idea that this is “how a dog would eat in nature.” The picture is more complicated than that idea suggests, because the same bone that scrapes off some tartar can also crack a tooth, cause choking, create a digestive obstruction, or expose the dog to bacterial contamination.

In 2026, virtually no conventionally trained veterinarian will recommend giving your Doberman bones. Holistic vets and part of the raw-feeding community take a different view, but in standard clinical practice — the FDA, the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, the AVMA, the Veterinary Information Network — the recommendation is unambiguous: avoid bones of all kinds, both cooked and raw. The reason isn’t theoretical concern; it’s the patients that arrive for emergency treatment every day.

What follows is not an invitation to introduce bones. It’s an account of what science and clinical practice actually show: a small number of documented benefits and a considerably larger number of well-documented risks.

Types of Bones Owners Consider

Three categories come up in practice. Large raw beef femur bones are the ones the raw community most often recommends because of their size, but they are at the same time the most common cause of tooth fractures in strong chewers. Poultry bones (chicken, turkey) are soft, hollow, and break easily into sharp fragments, which makes them especially dangerous. Commercial “bone treats” from pet shops — smoked, dried, or otherwise heat-processed — received a formal FDA warning in 2017.

What Science Shows About the Benefits

Dental health. The most-cited study in this area is Marx and colleagues, published in the Australian Veterinary Journal in 2016. The team followed eight adult Beagles given raw beef femur bones over 12 and 20 days. Dental calculus was reduced by 35.5% after three days and 70.6% after twelve days with cortical (the hard, outer) bone, while with spongy (the porous, inner) bone the reduction reached 87.8% after twenty days. Across both phases there were no tooth fractures and no obstructions.

The finding is real, but it comes with serious limitations: eight dogs, short duration, controlled conditions under veterinary supervision, and no tracking of long-term consequences. And something rarely mentioned alongside this study: the same Brazilian research group repeated the experiment in 2020 in the journal PLOS ONE using autoclaved bones, and that time it did find damage to the roots and enamel. In other words, “no fractures” was a finding specific to that protocol, not a general rule.

There is also a small student paper from Rutgers (Gallagher), conducted on six dogs, which measured the reduction of bacteria on the teeth: 79% with raw bones, 70.3% with brushing, 60.2% with bully sticks, and 54.6% with VeggieDent treats. Interesting, but it’s six dogs in a student journal, so it should be treated as an indication, not as proof.

Mental stimulation. Chewing releases endorphins and calms a dog. No one disputes that. But that’s a benefit of chewing as an activity, not of the bone as an object. Kong toys and other safer chews produce the same effect.

Bone marrow contains fats, calcium, phosphorus, and some vitamins and minerals. All of it can be replaced through a balanced diet, with no risk at all.

What Science Shows About the Risks

The risks are another story.

Tooth fractures. The Veterinary Information Network, a platform used by thousands of veterinarians, states it plainly: bones are too hard for dogs’ teeth. The most common injury is a “slab fracture” of the upper fourth premolar — the carnassial tooth, the large shearing tooth — which in a Doberman requires either extraction or root canal treatment by a specialist. Most of those procedures require general anesthesia, which in a breed predisposed to DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) carries an added risk that has to be weighed carefully.

There’s a simple rule of thumb, the so-called thumbnail test: if you can’t dent the object by pressing on it with your fingernail, it’s too hard for a dog’s teeth. Beef bones, deer antlers, and hard plastic chews all fail that test.

Obstructions and perforations. Fragments can lodge in the esophagus, stomach, or intestines. In the Doberman, a breed with a deep chest and a known predisposition to gastric torsion (GDV, an acute, life-threatening twisting of the stomach), this isn’t theory but a documented clinical problem. The sharp edges of cooked or smoked bones can pierce the wall of the digestive tract and cause peritonitis, a condition that requires emergency surgery.

Bacterial contamination. Raw bones carry a risk of Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria. A study of BARF feeding found Salmonella in 80% of food samples and 30% of fecal samples from raw-fed dogs, versus zero percent in dogs on commercial dry food. This isn’t only a canine problem but a public-health risk, particularly in households with children, the elderly, or immunocompromised members.

Pancreatitis. The high fat content of marrow can trigger acute pancreatitis in predisposed individuals. The Doberman isn’t a breed with a particularly high predisposition, but individual dogs with a history of digestive problems can be at serious risk.

FDA warning (2017). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a formal warning against commercial “bone treats.” The reports involved about 90 dogs across 68 filings, with obstructions, perforations, rectal bleeding, vomiting, diarrhea, and 15 deaths.

Fish Bones — a Separate Problem

Fish bones are often overlooked in the diet conversation, and they deserve special attention. They are extremely dangerous, especially from larger fish: thin, sharp, and prone to breaking into fragments that easily pierce or lodge in the upper digestive tract. Lodging in the esophagus or palate, intestinal perforation, and serious internal injuries are all well documented.

In practice, any fillet from a fish larger than your hand must be completely cleaned of bones before it’s given to a dog. Run your fingers over the fillet and remove anything sharp. Salmon, trout, hake, tuna, carp, and pike all have bones a dog must not consume.

Whole sardines and anchovies are the one exception routinely cited in the veterinary literature. Their bones are small and soft enough — especially from a can, where they’ve been softened under pressure — that they can usually be eaten safely along with the flesh. Canned sardines in water, with no oil, salt, or seasoning, are in fact an excellent addition to a Doberman’s diet, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and calcium.

One more caution: raw fish carries a parasite risk. Raw salmon and trout from certain regions can transmit the agent of “Salmon Poisoning Disease,” a condition that is fatal if not treated quickly. Fish for a dog’s diet is always cooked. Dried fish bones, fish heads, and bony scraps are not safe.

How to Reduce the Risk If You Do Give Bones

If, despite all of this, you decide to introduce bones, you can substantially reduce the risk. Never give cooked bones of any kind, because heat treatment makes bone brittle. Never give poultry bones. Avoid commercial “bone treats.” If you choose raw bones, choose large beef femur bones, while remaining aware that even these carry a real risk of fracture in strong chewers — and a Doberman in its first years of life is exactly that. Always supervise the dog and remove the bone before it starts breaking off pieces.

Safer alternatives exist: Kong toys, chews carrying the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal, and above all regular brushing with canine toothpaste, which is the most effective method of oral hygiene with none of the risk tied to bones. Add to that a professional cleaning at the vet once a year. Before introducing any element of raw feeding, consult your veterinarian, especially if the dog has a history of digestive problems, pancreatitis, or dental disease.

At the Orao Doberman kennel we do occasionally give bones — veal femur or chicken backs — but always under supervision, while the dog is eating, and these are exceptions, not a rule in the diet. The difference is that the risk is accepted consciously and under control, not routinely.

What to Feed Instead

For everyday feeding, a complete, balanced commercial food formulated for a large, active breed covers a Doberman’s nutritional needs without any of the risk that bones carry. Look for a food built around real meat protein, which supports the breed’s muscle condition, rather than one padded with artificial fillers. As a rough guide, an adult Doberman is usually fed twice a day, while a puppy needs three to four smaller meals spread across the day. If you want to add variety or a dental benefit, do it through the safer routes above — VOHC-approved chews, brushing, and the occasional canned sardine — rather than through bones.

Conclusion

The scientific literature confirms that raw beef bones can offer real benefits for oral health under controlled conditions. That same literature also confirms that these very bones carry serious risks: tooth fractures, obstructions, perforations, bacterial illness, pancreatitis. The veterinary profession, by a large majority, does not recommend bones — not because it’s unfamiliar with the studies, but because it sees the consequences every day.

The Doberman is a breed worth your time and commitment. Quality commercial food, regular brushing, and an annual dental exam are, today, safer, more predictable, and cheaper overall than any strategy that relies on bones.
